We often read articles on how bad it is that things in the pigeon sport are changing, how we no longer consider the fancier who is in the sport just for the fun of it, how important winning became, how new concepts and high level arguments spoil what is supposed to be just a game. Sorry, guys, as much as we value the "old hands" of pigeon fancying, we must accept that we live in a world of change. This does not mean that there is no room for those who practice the sport of pigeon racing for fun - there will always be room for them, but nobody can deny that, like in virtually every sport it is no longer good enough to race pigeons on muties and luck. Everything in life changes and those who can't act proactively or at least react quickly enough will not survive. So it was with the Dynosourus, the Dodo and the wooden hand clock.

In the sport of pigeon racing the gifted, those who have a natural talent to read the changes that take place and take steps to remain on top in spite of the changes are the ones who will survive. It is hard enough to become club champion in South Africa, even harder become union or federation champion. But hardest of all is to stay at the top. Silvere managed this on an international level for a staggering 34 years (!!), and he is still going very strong.

There is so much one can write about Silvere's performances over the years, and if you are like me you will probably skip the list of performances and read only the rest. So, I will mention performances only where it is necessary to support an argument or statement. I am not using ring numbers in this article - you can find them on Silvere's web site, if you are interested. Here are some highlights :
* Obtained his first 33 pigeons in 1969 from Robert Reybroeck * Strengthened his loft with the assistance of Roger Verhamme in 1973 and immediately started winning on provincial level * In 1978 Kleinen was awarded 1st national Ace Pigeon Hafo Deinze. This pigeon would become one of the most important breeders in the Toye lofts. His ring number can still be found in the pedigrees of many Toye champion racers and breeders. * Won 13 championships in 1982. Young Tarzan was crowned 2nd National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB * In 1983 Young Tarzan was crowned Olympiad Champion Long Distance pigeon in Prague * The famous Tarzan Boy was crowned 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance of Belgium KBDB in 1988 * Black Devil was crowned 1st International Ace Pigeon Extreme Long Distance Pigeon of Western Europe * In 1990 Princess was crowned 7th national Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB * Alibaba was crowned 1st national Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB in 1991 * In 1992 Invincible Montauban won the national race from Montauban, beating the second pigeon home by a whopping 20 minutes. * Romulus was crowned 1st International Ace Pigeon Extreme Long Distance of Western Europe in 1994. * Memphisto was crowned 6th national Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB in 1996 * In 1996 Silvere's pigeons won 16 races, to be followed by 22 firsts in 1997 * In 1997 Memphisto again excelled by being 3rd National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB * In 1998 Silvere's pigeons won 5 races provincial, a feat that they repeated in 1999 * In 2003 Goldiva was crowned 1st Ace Pigeon KBDB West Flanders and Red Opium was crowned 1st Ace Pigeon National FondTrophy.
If one were to read Silvere's history, it is clear that he knew exactly what he wanted from the day he purchased his first pigeons in 1968. When he did not achieve the successes he had in mind, he obtained the help of a professional loft manager and some better quality pigeons. The big breakthrough probably came when Silvère obtained pigeons from Robert Reybroeck in 1973.
The way in which he manages his lofts, breed pigeons and prepare pigeons for races is clearly focused on only one thing - to be the best. At the same time he never hesitated to cooperate with others. This enabled him to substiantially increase the quality of his pigeons when he and a number of other top pigeon fanciers decided to share breeding material. This was approximately 1989. This cooperation would become known as the Flanders' Connection and included fanciers such as Norbert Norman, Gaston Devooght, Maurice Hostyn and Roger Vereecke.
Through the years Silvere formulated a system of breeding and racing, based on a number of rules and convictions, which clearly proved to be correct, judging from the succes he achieves year in and year out. To mention but a few examples, he strongly believes that ace pigeons breed ace pigeons. Secondly, he is willing to sell youngsters from his ace pigeons, but never the aces themselves. When I read about the unbelievable performances of Memphisto in 1996 I phoned Silvere to ask if I could buy Memphisto. He nearly flipped and told me in no uncertain terms that this pigeon would still bring him a lot of wins and that he would never sell him. This proved to be in the cherry, because in 1997 Memphisto was 3rd National Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB. He did, however, sell me a youngster from Memphisto's parents. ( Invincible Montauban & Daphnis ). The offspring of this youngster already bred me two two-year-old champions. Those of you who read my short "thank you" article in the December 2003 issue of SA & W. Pigeon News -- on my pigeon that got lost and found his way back home with the help of the Bloemfontein pigeon fanciers is also an offspring ( 50% ) of the youngster from Invincible Montauban and Daphnis.
Through the years Silvere never took his eyes off the target. He was constantly on the lookout for new initiatives [Tens de ter uma conta e sessão iniciada para poderes visualizar esta imagem]to improve the quality and performance of his pigeons. He always had the ability to recognize quality. This brought him to the doors of Maurice Casaert of Néchin, from whom he obtained brilliant breeding stock such as Belle Deseyn.
There are so many simple and logical things that Silvere does to gain a competitive advantage over his rivals that one can actually write a book on them. When I collected my pigeons from him in 1997 he spent almost an entire day giving me advice on how to race, breed, medicate and feed my pigeons. Suffice to say that I doubt if Silvere's wife ever served any of the hundreds of visitors that visit every year as much coffee as she served me that day! Then again, a true Afrikaner cannot resist a good cup of coffee!
I received a fax from Silvère on 7 January 2004 in which he explained to me what he is doing to ensure that his pigeons will continue winning. He told me that the focus in pigeon racing has shifted during the past decade or so. Long Distance Races in which relatively old pigeons excel are no longer the only important races. Short distance races and good performances by young pigeons are now as important, if not more so. A second reason why it is important for youngsters to mature more quickly than in the past is because of the popularity of one loft races. Almost all one loft races are limited to pigeons younger than one year old. It would therefore not be advisable to breed pigeons that can perform well as two and three year olds, but not as youngsters. What are needed are pigeons that can win at the age of seven to eight months. They must be fast, strong, mature very early and perform well under all weather conditions. He therefore changed his breeding system to achieve this, and found that the best way to breed such pigeons is by crossing long distance and middle distance pigeons. And man, did it work for him ! The Belgian Newspaper ("Belgische Duivensport") ranked Silvere's loft as the best in Belgium for a period of five years (1996 to 2000). This, in my mind, is what true quality is all about.

Zé bonita homenagem ... tal como na criação os belgas estam a anos luz de portugal são grandes mestres nos pombos, na fauna silvestre, canarios etc etc há muito que vamos aprendendo com eles por isso é bom ir as expos e afins sempre se aprende alguma coisa ... gosto muito de columbofilia mas é um hobby que requer muita disciplina e muito tempo , mesmo muito tempo.
